Par la Troupe du Roy; La Gloire du Dome du Val-De-Grace. Poe'me sur la Peinture de Monsieur Mignart. Par Mr. de Moliere. en l'année 1669. Of the many early publications of Moliere's complete works, theonly compilation that contains these works in volume four is Les Oeuvres de Monsieur de Moliere Paris, chez Denys T hierry, Claude Barbin, et Pierre T rabouillet, MDC.L)C/KXYI (1682). However, the three engraved frontispieces are somewhat modestly executed, unlike those originally signed by Pierre Brissart and Jean Sauvé (fl. 1660-1691) in the known J 682 edition, leading us to suppose that our copy is a contrefacon. The texts of the plays and poem follow the ?rst editions of each work. Jean-Baptiste Poquelin was a lawy r in Orléans before he discovered his life-long vocation in the theatre. He founded a troupe called de L'Illustre Thédtre, assumed the name Moliére and travelled throughout France performing his plays, which are still universally appreciated for their satirical humour. The bookplate, by French engraver Isidore-Stanislas-Henri Helman (1743 - c.1809), indicates provenance of the family of French novelist Marguerite Yourcenar (1903-1987), whose nom-deplume is an anagram of Crayencour. Mme. Yourcenar, a well- respected member of the Academie franeaise, spent her later years in Maine. in contemporary full mottled calf, real raised bands, gilt decorations in the panels, double leather labels, (title stamping not entirely clear), Wanting volume title page, contemporary signature in black ink on front free fly, Engraved armorial bookplate of Cleenewerek de Crayencour, signed Helman, 1768., a very good sound copy (ds1).

Errata leaf at end. Engraved folding map of Baja California and 2 engraved plates of native Californians, by E. Verelst, woodcut head- and tail-pieces, ornamental woodcut initials. Original publisher's binding. Provenance: Zur Breitenbauchschen Bibliotheck (with exlibris). The book was refunded from the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Sachsen-Anhalt, Halle, Germany to the heirs of Breitenbauch and sold to the present owner. FIRST EDITION. Baegert was a Jesuit missionary in Lower California from 1751 until the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1768. In this account he seeks to disprove the prevailing myth of California as land of plenty, emphasizing instead the merciless heat, dangerous animals, hostile terrain, and untrustworthiness of its inhabitants. The book is nonetheless filled with valuable ethnographical and historical information. The map shows the location of the many Jesuit missions in Baja California and the route taken by the author in his journeys to and from the region. It is derived from Consag's important 1746 delineation of the peninsula. The two plates are not included in all copies.
