John Francis Eugene Prud'homme (1800-1892) was born on St. Thomas, West Indies; in 1807 he was brought to New York by his parents and in 1814 was apprenticed to his brother-in-law, the engraver Thomas Gimbrede (later drawing-master at West Point). By 1821 he was engraving under his own name, and for the next three decades was a popular engraver for books and periodicals. From 1852 until his retirement in1885 he engraved banknote designs, first for a private firm and then from 1869 for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C. He was an Academician of the National Academy, and for two decades served as its Curator. Upon retirement he continued producing artistic work, and was the oldest living American engraver. His letters, both to Rev. E.F. Strickland, concern his sending the picture "One Lord.", and his hope that he may comply with Strickland's request fora photograph.
