Each leather spine bears a black leather spine lined and lettered in gilt; the hinge of the front board of vol 2 is 90% split including a 2 cm deficiency but still holding. Some acceptable soiling in texts, pages rough cut, binding secure, original endpapers present. Herewith the title to vol 1: 'Erratics: by a Sailor containing Rambles in Norfolk and elsewhere. In which are interspersed, some observations on the late attempts to revive the Cromwellian observance of the Sabbath. Together with some hints on the present pernicious mode of burying the dead; and a remedy proposed.'. In a contemporary half calf binding with marbled paper boards. First edition. A lively and eccentric collection of satirical and descriptive letters centred on Norfolk, particularly Yarmouth, blending local observation with broader social commentary. Issued as a series of "Letters," with contents pages and errata, the volume also includes a dedication "To Icenia, Goddess of Norfolk." The present copy is further distinguished by a pencil sketch to the front blank, depicting a sailor figure with telescope, and to rear blank, depicting a group drinking. In a contemporary half calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, worn. Front hinge cracked to upper half, with loss to calf. Lifting to marbled paper from joints, more so to rear board. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in slight loss to calf and paper. Front hinge strained, failing to upper half but holding. Previous owner"s pencil inscription to front paste down, dated 1995; sketches to free endpapers. Previous owner"s contemporary ink inscription to dedication at pp. iv. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean. Slight soiling to title page. The odd light spot and handling mark, heavier to first few leaves. Traces of reinforcement to gutter of title page. Good Only. book.
