The mottled spine is cocked with bumping and fraying on the ends. The front board shows a rub near the top edge and some spots. The rear board shows slight rubbing, a small pinch and some tiny spots. The board corners are bumped with some slight rubbing. The board edges show slight rubbing. The pages are mildly toned, but are supple and unmarked. There is a partially erased penciled price in the upper right hand corner of the ffep. The page edges show slight dust darkening on the top edge, else the edges are clean. The book is securely bound. According to the preface, written by a fellow criminologist, Smith died just prior to completing the volume. Includes escapes from Sing-Sing, San Quintin, Joliet, Leavenworth, The Tombs, among others. Edward H. Smith (1885-1927) studied at the University of Kansas and the University of Jena, at the latter of which he studied under Dr. Ernst Haeckel. He was the Sunday editor of The Chicago Tribune before coming to New York in 1912. In addition to being on the staff of The New York Sunday World, he also wrote on criminology for The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, and other periodicals. His other books are Famous Poison Mysteries, Con, Mysteries of the Missing, and The New Criminology.
