First edition, presentation copy, inscribed "A Monsieur Mignet, hommage de l'auteur, P. A. Dugau" on the half-title. A loosely inserted autograph note indicates that this copy was presented to "l'Academie" (presumably, the Académie des sciences morales et politiques). The addressee may have been François Mignet (1796-1884), a journalist and leading historian of the French Revolution who was then permanent secretary of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques. This social study is the fruit of fifteen years of research into the well-being of the poor. Pierre-Armand Dufau (1795-1877) worked as an instructor, and then a director, of the Imperial Institute for Young Blind People in Paris, the first school for the blind in the world. Contemporary quarter roan, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, marbled sides and endpapers, brown sprinkled edges. Light rubbing, faint sunning to spine, minor foxing to contents: a very good copy indeed.

First edition in French, translated by George Bentham, of extracts from part two of Jeremy Bentham's Chrestomathia, his plan for higher education amongst the middling and higher ranks of life, complete with the very rare large folding plate "Vue synoptique" printed on thick paper. Chuo C1.5; Everett, p. 528. Octavo (214 x 130 mm). 3 folding plates on 2 leaves, folding table "Système figuré des connaissances humaines" and large folding plate "Vue synoptique du champ d'art-et-science". Later pebble grain morocco and marbled boards, spine lettered gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges uncut. Presentation inscription "offert par l'auteur" to half title. Ownership initials E. Z. in gilt at foot of spine. Short tears to Vue synoptique on folds. An excellent copy.
