First edition, presentation copy, inscribed "A Monsieur Mignet, hommage de l'auteur, P. A. Dugau" on the half-title. A loosely inserted autograph note indicates that this copy was presented to "l'Academie" (presumably, the Académie des sciences morales et politiques). The addressee may have been François Mignet (1796-1884), a jo…urnalist and leading historian of the French Revolution who was then permanent secretary of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques. This social study is the fruit of fifteen years of research into the well-being of the poor. Pierre-Armand Dufau (1795-1877) worked as an instructor, and then a director, of the Imperial Institute for Young Blind People in Paris, the first school for the blind in the world. He was also involved with a number of other philanthropic and educational societies. Granier, Essai de bibliographie charitable, 104. Octavo. Woodcut tailpieces. Contemporary quarter roan, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, marbled sides and endpapers, brown sprinkled edges. Light rubbing, faint sunning to spine, minor foxing to contents: a very good copy indeed.

Z. in gilt at foot of spine. Short tears to Vue synoptique on folds. An excellent copy.
