Leather. Condition: Good. First edition. A scarce first edition of this critical work regarding punctuation and sentence structure by Anglican priest Joseph Robertson. Robertson's work was one of the earliest on this topic to be used for popular reading. He discusses the structure and methodical rules behind punctuation in addit…ion to many other topics. Complete with the half-title, errata and publisher's adverts. With the bookplate of W Taren Fehsenfeld to the front pastedown. The name W Taren Fehensfeld has been recorded on the 1940 census as being in Maryland. This work also brings discussion on the technical terms used for books such as catchwords and signatures. Robertson delves into many aspects of laguage such as abbreviations. David Steel answered this work in his 'Remarks on an Essay'. Joseph Robertson was known as a prolific critic. He revised several sermon collections and was a frequent contributor to ;The Gentleman's Magazine'. A scarce and interesting work. In a full tree calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Cracks to the front joint, with the hinge strained but firm. Patches of light rubbing to the rear joint. Rear hinge is slightly strained but firm. Loss to the head and tail of spine. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, W Taren Fesenfeld. Prior owner's inscription has been removed to the half-title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with light scattered spots to pages. Good. None (illustrator). book.
