Joseph Robertson (1726-1802) was a clergyman and a prolific writer, contributing often to the Gentleman's Magazine. This is one of his last pub…lications, an interesting and sensible essay on English prosody. Robertson considered the classicists' obsession with Greek and Latin feet (trochees, dactyls, spondees etc) to be misguided (thus misleading for readers of English poetry), and wanted to replace it with 'an order and succession of accented and unaccented syllables'. His point is eloquently made in a very short first chapter, in which he shows that, in English verse, long and short syllables alike can be stressed, and will have the same effect. He gives a line from one of Pope's Pastorals: The hills and rocks attend my sylvan lay and replaces the short stressed syllables with long vowels: The trees and gales repeat my rural lay demonstrating that the scansion is unaffected. Provenance. Caroline Wyndham, with several inscriptions, the earliest dated 27 March 1800.

Robertson's work was one of the earliest on this topic to be used for popular reading. He discusses the structure and methodical rules behind punctuation in addit…ion to many other topics. Complete with the half-title, errata and publisher's adverts. With the bookplate of W Taren Fehsenfeld to the front pastedown. The name W Taren Fehensfeld has been recorded on the 1940 census as being in Maryland. This work also brings discussion on the technical terms used for books such as catchwords and signatures. Robertson delves into many aspects of laguage such as abbreviations. David Steel answered this work in his 'Remarks on an Essay'. Joseph Robertson was known as a prolific critic. He revised several sermon collections and was a frequent contributor to ;The Gentleman's Magazine'. A scarce and interesting work. In a full tree calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Cracks to the front joint, with the hinge strained but firm. Patches of light rubbing to the rear joint. Rear hinge is slightly strained but firm. Loss to the head and tail of spine. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, W Taren Fesenfeld. Prior owner's inscription has been removed to the half-title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with light scattered spots to pages. Good. None (illustrator). book.
