Very Good in Dustjacket. Translated from the French by Willard R. Trask. Bollingen Series - XLVI. 195 pages. hardcover. keywords: Philosophy Mythology Europe Romania Literature Translated World Literature. DESCRIPTION - This is an essay on mankind's experience of history and ifs interpretation, beginning with a study of the traditional or mythological view, and concluding with a comparative estimate of modern historiological approaches. In traditional societies the historical emphasis is placed on the permanence and continuity of the archetypal forms: man lives, so to speak, in a state of perpetual beginning. In the modern world two orientations prevail: the traditional, of cyclic time, denying the concept of history advancing in time (Brahmanism, Buddhism, the Edda, Platonism, etc.); and that of progressive time, stressing change and beset by a sense of sin (Judaism, Christianity). Now, at a moment when modern man has brought his race almost to the point of annihilation, the historical attitude has been all but discredited. The author seeks an answer to the question: What can protect us from the terror of history? inventory #35761.…

Add to basketPamphlet. Condition: Good. No Dust Jacket. First Edition. Booklets 1-9 and 11 of The Decasseres Books, all published in 1936. The booklets are in fair-good condition. Booklets No. 1 and 2 have the most wear, with chipping and loss around the edges, #1 also has a sticker scar on the front cover. The other 8 booklets all have varying degrees of chipping and edgewear. Some of the books still have the loose ad flyer for the set (of 12) tucked inside the front cover. Some of the book blocks are pulling away from the interior of the spines but all are holding together well. These booklets are scarce at all, finding 10 of them at once is surprising! Benjamin DeCasseres (sometimes De Casseres) was a Sephardic New Yorker, journalist and writer, who greatly admired Nietzsche and hyper-individualism, yet who decried both capitalism and socialism. These scarce booklets put forth some of his unusual philosophy. He was read and admired by H. L. Mencken, Jack London and Eugene O'Neill. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.…
