Hardcover. Condition: g- to vg. Third edition. Small octavo (7 5/8 x 5"). [6], 427, [1]pp (Vol. 1); [4], 323, [1]pp (Vol. 2); [4], 380pp (Vol. 3). Original 3/4 calf over marbled paper covered boards, with gold lettering and ruling to spines. Originally published in 1821 by Charles Knight (the second, third and fourth by Henry Colburn in 1822, 1823, and 1824), "The Etonian," which lasted for only ten months (October 1820 - August 1821) is most certainly the most famous of school journals - though some of the contributors were already at college. Among the chief writers of this collection of essays and poetry were H. N. Coleridge, Sidney Walker, C. H. Townshend, and John Moultrie, who describes Praed in his 'Dream of Life'. Praed signed his articles as 'Peregrine Courtenay,' the imaginary president of the 'King of Clubs,' supposed to conduct the paper. Some rubbing along spines and edges. Sporadic foxing throughout. Bindings in overall good- to good, interior in good to very good condition.
