The author draws on Washington's early life to illustrate his subject's principles and habits, with an emphasis on self-control, obedience, and perseverance. Specific examples from Washington's career as a military commander and statesman are used to reinforce the author's lessons on character development. The book also explores Washington's spiritual beliefs and his dependence on divine providence, suggesting that his success was due in part to his recognition of God's role in his life. Ultimately, this book presents Washington as an exemplary figure whose life offers valuable insights into the formation of a strong and virtuous character. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. There is only one other copy of this book for sale anywhere on the Internet. That copy is a 1847 Second Edition selling for $1,120.00. My copy is the First Edition (SD) published in 1846. So that's how rare it is. Singularly rare. And happily it is in Very Good condition. There are photographs for you to judge. But i'll reference the imperfections: there are two dark spots on the front cover (1st photo), there is very slight loss at the spine ends (2nd photo), there is small rub-through at the corners with a spot of loss at the front right corner as well (1st photo), and there is a light spot of faded green on the back (3rd photo). That's it for the covers. As you can see in the 2nd photo the gilt design and lettering on the spine is very bright. The design on the front and back cover is also in Very Good condition. And the book is solidly bound. The only binding imperfection is that for pages 9-13 (one sheet) the upper twine binding is loose. However, the lower one is not loose and therefore the pages remain bound, tho you could obviously pull the top of the pages away a bit from the center if you so wished. I don't see another instance of either twining coming loose anywhere else in the book. And I don't see any instance of the gutter being visible, there are no cracks anywhere, it is that well-bound. The pages are not at all brittle, in fact they are supple. There is light foxing on the three blank front end papers and two blank rear end papers. The first front end paper has a small penned name. The title page (see photo) has a little bit of foxing. And that's the case throughout : most pages have only very minor foxing, a few spots. And a minority have none at all. Nowhere is there heavy foxing or even what I would identify as moderate foxing. And there is little to no soiling. And the pages are actually fairly bright. There is a frontispiece illustration of Washington praying. And after the last page (page 108) there is an illustration of 'Brick Church Chapel' opposite of City Hall, New York. That is followed by 17 pages of 'Books, Theological, Religious, Miscellaneous And Juvenile, published by M.W. Dodd'. By the way, I didn't see any tear on any page in the book. A remarkably well-preserved book. 169 years-old. Joseph Alden (January 4, 1807 - August 30, 1885) was an American academic and Presbyterian pastor. He was born in Cairo, New York, in 1807. He received his bachelor's degree from Union College, going on to receive his advanced degrees from Columbia University. He was professor at Williams College in 1835, professor at Lafayette College in 1853, President of Jefferson College in 1857, and Principal of the State Normal School (now University at Albany, SUNY) in Albany, New York until 1882.
