Hardback, 276 pagesPublished Price £25 In May 1944, 40,000 Polish soldiers attacked and captured the hilltops of Monte Cassino, bringing to a close the largest, bloodiest battle fought by the western Allies in the Second World War. Days later the Allied armies marched into Rome seizing the first Axis capital. No-one in 1939 could have foreseen an entire Polish Corps engaged on the Italian Front. Most had been held prisoner in the USSR following Polands defeat and their release by Stalin was only achieved through the intense negotiations of British and Polish politicians generals, notably Sikorski and Anders, The Polish Army was evacuated to Iran in 1942 and subsequently incorporated into the British Army as the Polish II Corps. Their ultimate post-war fate was shamefully ignored until too late. This book, which charts the extraordinary wartime story of the exiled Polish Army in the east, makes extensive use of undiscovered archive material. It reveals in depth the relations between the British and Polish General Staffs and the never ending hardships of the Polish soldiers.

This book chronicles the author's firsthand experiences during the Anglo-Boer War, known to the author and his fellow Afrikaners as the South African War. As a Boer commandant, the author provides a unique perspective on the conflict's major battles and skirmishes, including the disastrous defeat at Elandslaagte. The author also details his interactions with the Boer leadership, including the controversial General Joubert, and the psychological toll that the war took on Boer fighters and the civilian population. His detailed account of his capture by the British in 1902 paints a vivid picture of the desperate end to the war for many Boer fighters. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

"This new edition to this book was written in this free country, , where my heart speaks as I feel, with memories of but a few years, repeatedly illuminated anew by news of oppression, hatred and desolation rife in my native land. My earnest hope is that this American edition may be of benefit and entertainment to the good people of my adopted country, America." The General had settled in New Mexico when this Introduction was written in Feb 22 1906.
