The collection runs to twenty-eight essays, open letters, speeches and critical reviews, and includes King of the Hill, his widely cited account of the 1971 Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier heavyweight championship bout, alongside pieces on the Apollo space missions, the women's liberation movement, the Black Power movement, bullfighting, independent cinema and contemporary literary figures. Arranged from selections written between 1966 and 1971, the compilation collects work originally commissioned by Life, Esquire, Partisan Review, Playboy and The New York Review of Books. The pieces demonstrate the participatory New Journalism method Mailer championed, merging autobiographical reportage w/ philosophical inquiry to document the moral, artistic and political tensions of late twentieth-century American life. Norman Mailer, 1923-2007, was a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning American author, journalist and co-founder of The Village Voice. Known for The Naked and the Dead and The Armies of the Night, he stood at the center of post-war American literature and the development of creative nonfiction. This Signet issue followed the 1972 Little, Brown and Company edition and carried the retrospective to a mass-market readership.
