A sketchbook of bull-fighting marker drawings by Bernard Kay done at Nîmes May 1955, in plain brown wrappers, stapled, 175x225mm with six full-page drawings by Kay. Signed by Cocteau (in biro) and Picasso (with Kay's marker pen). A copy of André Verdet's 'L'Homme au Mouton de Pablo Picasso, inscribed by Kay. A card with an illustration of Picasso painting of Sylvette David . A folding greetings card with a self-portrait by Sylvette David, inscribed to Bernard Kay. Two envelopes with Picasso design for 'Exposition Vallauris'. Two colour postcards of designs by Picasso also for 'Exposition de Vallauris A.M.France'. \a sheet of paper with the inscription 'To Bernard Kay avec mes meilleurs amitiés. Tobias'. A copy of the postcard from Bernard Kay detailing how he obtained the signatures of Picasso and Cocteau and three further contemporary postcards to Bernard Kay. A fine souvenir of the short-lived pagan arcadia of Vallauris where Picasso lived from 1948-1955. After that time he gradually retreated to his various houses in order to work undisturbed. Première présentation à la Galerie Paul Rosenberg de Paris d'une uvre annonçant le taureau de « Guernica » : « La sculpture nègre devant la fenêtre » | Paul Rosenberg | Paris 1939 | 11 x 13.5 cm | Une feuille pliée ([4 pp.]) | Rare édition originale du catalogue de la dernière exposition de Picasso à la Galerie Paul Rosenberg de Paris, du 17janvier au 18 février 1939 au 21 rue La Boétie. Premier plat illustré d'une photographie en noir et blanc de la pièce maîtresse: La Sculpture nègre devant la fenêtre, aujourd'hui connue sous le titre de Buste de Minotaure devant une fenêtre (Collection privée, cf. Zervos. VIII, 360). Peinte le 19 avril 1937, elle est considérée comme la préfiguration du taureau de Guernica, que l'artiste réalisera quelques semaines plus tard. Très bel état de conservation. La plaquette contient la liste des 33 uvres exposées, classées selon leur année de création : 1936, 1937 ou 1938. Au verso figure le titre et la date de la prochaine exposition: «Centenaire de Cézanne» le «20 février 1939». Ces deux événements ne seront suivis que d'une ultime exposition de Georges Braque avant la fermeture de la galerie et l'exil définitif de Paul Rosenberg aux États-Unis. * L'événement connut un grand succès, comme le rapportera le collectionneur et sculpteur américain Meric Callery au premier directeur du MoMA de New York, Alfred H. Barr: «?L'exposition de Picasso que présente actuellement R. [Rosenberg] est surprenante par son caractère si joli, coloré et gai. Elle attire plus de 600 personnes par jour.?» (Making Modernism, Michael C. FitzGerald, 1996) «Joli, coloré et gai», les qualificatifs peuvent paraître étonnants tant au regard du style de Picasso que du contexte politique de 1939. De fait, le thème de l'exposition, composée essentiellement de natures mortes réalisées entre 1936 et 1938 dans l'atelier de Tremblay-sur-Mauldre, contraste en apparence avec l'actualité tragique. C'est justement à partir de 1937 que les nazis commencèrent à confisquer plus de 20?000 uvres d'art moderne pour organiser la terrible exposition «?Entartete Kunst?» («Art dégénéré»). Celle-ci circula dans toutes les grandes villes d'Allemagne et s'acheva, en juin 1939, par une grande vente aux enchères pour financer la guerre, précédé de l'autodafé de plus de 5?000 tableaux dans la cour de la caserne principale de Berlin. Parfaitement conscient de la tragédie en cours, Paul Rosenberg prend ses dispositions pour sauver le plus d'uvres possibles et organise la même année la première rétrospective de Picasso au MoMa, où sera exposée, et sauvegardée, Guernica. En 1940, il se réfugiera définitivement à New York où il ouvrira sa célèbre galerie sur la 79erue, tandis que les 2?000 uvres qu'il n'aura pu emporter seront spoliées par les nazis. Sous son apparence inoffensive, l'exposition d'«uvres récentes» du premier représentant de l'Art dégénéré, chez un galeriste juif, est un véritable acte de résistance à la montée du nazisme. Mais c'est surtout à travers une uvre, mise à l'honneur dans le salon principal de la Galerie et reproduite en tête du catalogue, que Rosenberg et Picasso transforment l'exposition de natures mortes en geste hautement politique. Connue plus tard sous le titre Buste du Minotaure devant une fenêtre, cette uvre «transitionnelle», comme le soulignera l'historienne de l'art Vérane Tasseau, est éminemment symbolique: « Le taureau ne représente pas le fascisme mais la brutalité et les ténèbres » déclarait Picasso lors d'un entretien avec un jeune peintre amateur Jerome Seckler à l'automne 1944 pour la revue américaine marxiste New Masses, ce dernier voulant lui faire dire que la série de natures mortes à la tête de taureau réalisée fin 1938 constituait une uvre politique dans la lignée de Guernica.» Cette première tête taurine de la série des natures mortes deviendra au fil de l'année 1938 un étrange visage humain zoomorphe. Elle est cependant encore intitulée dans le catalogue La Sculpture nègr.
