Les noms des trois artistes formant les yeux, et pas les moindres - Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans - la date, avril 1935, le nom du galeriste, Julien levy : tout était excitant. Quant à la signification de l'assertion " anti-graphic photographs ", elle opposait différentes interprétations possibles que tout curieux de photographies se devait d'éclaircir. Julien Levy fut l'un des galeristes les plus influents du 20è siècle. Sa galerie, qui ouvrit en 1931 à New York, joua un rôle essentiel dans la diffusion des avant-gardes françaises aux Etats-Unis, et tout spécialement le surréalisme. C'est la première fois depuis lors que sont réunis ces tirages d'époque, qui constituent un ensemble exceptionnel d'images essentielles et parfois méconnues. Cette exposition historique rassemble l' uvre de jeunesse de trois grands maîtres de la photographie. Levy n'a pas vécu l'avènement de la photographie sur le marché de l'art - qu'il ambitionnait pourtant. Il revendiquait " l'état de grâce " lorsqu'on lui parlait de son talent de découvreur exceptionnel, mais la liberté de ses choix et la qualité de son il ont jalonné de pierres incontestables l'évolution de la photographie.
