A truly rare collection of experiences by one of America's great lawyers. Henry Lauren Clinton (1820-1899) was one of the premier lawyers of his day and was involved with some of the most notorious cases America had ever seen. He defended Emma Cunningham, a wife accused of murdering her husband, in what would be considered the O. J. Simpson trial of the 1800's. Clinton was also in counsel in the prosecution of William M. "Boss" Tweed, the corrupt head of the Tammany Hall political machine in New York City. He was at the forefront of the reorganization of Tammany Hall and became their spokesman. He achieved success in surrogate court as well, receiving the largest single fee paid to a lawyer, between $300,000- $500,000. In April 1896 Clinton had his first book published, "Extraordinary Cases", a collection of some of the most celebrated and peculiar cases that he had been counsel in. The author inscribed this particular copy to the Honorable Judge Albert Haight of Buffalo. Judge Haight's remarkably long service as a New York state judge-starting at the age of 30 as a Supreme Court Justice, continuing to the mandatory retirement age of age 70 on the Court of Appeals, and continuing still as an official judicial referee until his death at age 84: Haight possibly holds the length of continuous service record for any Judge throughout New York State to this day.
