First edition, first printing, signed by the author on the title page. This copy of the first book in the best-selling Wheel of Time series is one of a small number of wrappered copies which were rebound by the publishers into cloth covers after the small run of 1,500 cloth copies (most of which went to libraries) was exhausted. The hybrid wrappers/cloth issue of The Eye of the World is distinguished by being perfect-bound inside the cloth covers, rather than with the usual quires. It still has the colophon stating "First edition, February 1990", the number line including the 1, the ISBNs for both paperback and hardcover issues listed (removed in later printings), and the first printing jacket priced $24.95. Robert Jordan is the pen name of James Oliver Rigney, Jr. (1948-2007), a veteran of the Vietnam war who later worked as a nuclear physicist for the US Navy before turning to writing in 1977. The Wheel of Time series spans 14 novels (the final three written by Brandon Sanderson after Jordan's death) and is now one of the best-selling fantasy series since The Lord of the Rings. Octavo. Original blue boards, spine lettered in gilt, illustrated endpapers. With dust jacket. Spine ends and lower outer corner of front cover lightly bumped, rear endpapers misbound upside down during manufacture, slight loss to outer margin of final leaf where previously adhered to free endpaper; jacket unclipped, ends of faintly sunned spine panel a little creased: a very good copy in near-fine jacket.
