First edition thus. viii, [iv], 370pp. Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) was a French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. He is best known for his 'Fables', which provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe and numerous alternative versions in France. The translator of this English collection is not stated but is understood to be John Matthews (1755-1826), an English physician and poet, who was also involved in local affairs and politics in Herefordshire. The translation contains partisan allusions to the politics of the day, and original French is given on facing pages. To the collection four Fables are introduced from the pen of a friend, and are marked with an asterisk. The book is bound in later (probably late 20th C.) blue cloth covered boards with gild titling on a brown cloth label on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards. The contents are tight and clean with two names written on the title-page. Tipped-in between the first and second front free endpapers is a slip of paper bearing the following inscription: "With the kind regards of The Author". Inscribed by Author(s).
