Loose leaf. Condition: g to vg. First edition. Folio. (1)12 plates. Original card box clamshell with vellum on cover, tan cloth on spine; with gilt handwritten typeface on cover, red handwritten title on spine. Calligraphic title and vignette in black and red by hand on stiff handmade paper plate. This group of b/w portrait photographs (11 1/2 x 9") tipped onto stiff cream handmade paper plates appear to be samples, presented to Bruce C. Clarke, as a selection of Starczewski's photographs published in Starczewski's 1966 book titled "Menschen: das Antlitz unserer Zeit," with selected text from the work of poet Ludwig Derleth. The Inscription "Oct. 1979 To Joe Yeager with best wishes the Clarke Lake Monticello" and the address label "Gen. Bruce C. Clarke, Carl Vinson Hall, McLean, Virginia," suggest that this portfolio was given as a present by Bruce C. Clarke, Jr., probably the son of General Bruce C. Clarke, to Joe Yeager. The 12 photographic portraits are comprised of 4 images found in the book including "Alter Bürstenbilder" (the cover image) and actress Anne Kersten (p.59), as well as 2 other variant images of subjects found in the book including writer Hans Ludwig Held (p 83). The final six images were not present in the final published book at all, including famed actor Rudolf Klein-Rogge and 5 other as yet unidentified images. In addition to the famous figures, other subjects of the photographer included portraits of unknown peasant women, worker, clochards, students. etc. [WITH] Menchen: Das Antlitz Unserer Zeit, a signed copy of the published book. Page 55 has been torn out. Light sporadic foxing to the initial and final pages including the title page. Text in German. Clamshell with vellum cover sunned with some wear along edges, some foxing to spine with back cover rubbed. One photo (Anne Kersten) with small brownish stain in lower left. Some photos with minor chips, one with very small crease in lower right corner. Handmade plates with light wear along edges. Clamshell in overall good, photographs in very good condition.
N.E. Wolff (illustrator). First Edition. WARMLY INSCRIBED BY AUTHORS CHUCK WIELGUS AND ALEXANDER WOLFF on the half-title page. Original pen-and-ink drawing, 12 x 9 3/4 inches, signed by the illustrator in the lower left corner, "H. Thomson 07," with various shades of blue, brown, yellow, and flesh-tone wash coloring. Pictured as a full-color plate (as in this drawing, but not as vibrant) opposite page 238 in "Silas Marner" by George Elliot (London: Macmillan, 1907; "With illustrations by Hugh Thomson"). "His drawings showed a delightful skill in landscape work . all of [his illustrated books] he showed a fine appreciation of thee author's point of view, together with much character and imagination of his own . being usually called upon for pictures of the dainty graces and foibles of seventeenth and eighteenth century and early Victorian society . he destroyed much of his work as soon as drawn" (DNB). Fine. Matted, glazed, and framed (some chipping at gilt frame edges). (3793).
