Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Near Fine. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Near Fine dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is crisp and clean. "Her first professional sale came from "Eustace," a ninety-…word vignette at the age of 21 in 1968. She continued to work in various jobs for almost another decade, due to rejection of her books. Her first novel (for children) was The Dragon Hoard, published in 1971 by Macmillan. Her career really took off with the acceptance in 1975 by DAW Books USA of her adult fantasy epic The Birthgrave a mass-market paperback. Many British publishers rejected The Birthgrave thus she wrote to DAW Books. Lee subsequently maintained a prolific output in popular genre writing. The Birthgrave allowed Lee to be a full-time writer and stop doing "stupid and soul-killing jobs." During the 90's her books were not published due to the changes in publishing. The style that made her whole career met strict objections from publishers at that time. " (from Wikipedia).

Published with the assistance of the New Zealand HydrologySociety TVNZ Publisher/ Listener ( Wellington, N.Z ) 1986 ISBN 0908690142 (hbk) Photos by Bruce Foster. Faces of the River is a celebration of New Zealand's rivers in all their aspects but esp…ecially the human one. This book is a New Zealand historical geography, which explores a wide range of rivers - from the wild to the dammed. The ancient maps of this land are shimmering. In contemplating a river's flow or it's meander, in listening to its murmur, one may come to hear the heartbeat of the land . most vitally we require the wisdom to recognize that, as with all living things on this planet, their well-being is our own. Original Wraps. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket, as Issued. First Paperback Edition. First UK paperback edition of the authors third published book, and second novel. The book was first published in the UK in hardback by W. H. Allen in 1962, and originally in New Zealand by Pegasus Press in 1961. ***Near fine in colour illustrat…ed card covers, which are just very slightly rubbed at the edges. No creases or tears. No reading creases to the spine. Covers clean and bright. Spine tight. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Paper stock just slightly tanned. No tears. ***254 pages. 196mm x 126mm. ***'Janet Paterson Frame ONZ CBE (28 August 1924 - 29 January 2004) was a New Zealand author. She was internationally renowned for her work, which included novels, short stories, poetry, juvenile fiction, and an autobiography, and received numerous awards including being appointed to the Order of New Zealand, New Zealand's highest civil honour. Frame's celebrity derived from her dramatic personal history as well as her literary career. Following years of psychiatric hospitalisation, Frame was scheduled for a lobotomy that was cancelled when, just days before the procedure, her debut publication of short stories was unexpectedly awarded a national literary prize. Many of her novels and short stories explore her childhood and psychiatric hospitalisation from a fictional perspective, and her award-winning three-volume autobiography was adapted into the film "An Angel at My Table" (1990), directed by Jane Campion.' (Wiki) ***'Like the late Jean Rhys, this remarkable New Zealand novelist has built up a reputation that fair dazzles, and deservedly so' (Publishers weekly). ***'"Faces in the Water" is about confinement in mental institutions, about the fear the sane have of the mad and the ways in which that fear transforms into banishment and punishment of those whose reaction to a truly cruel and insane world is to move into a world which is self-created.' (Quote and review quote taken from the back cover) ***First UK paperback edition of Janet Frame's second novel. An uncommon title to find now in the first Women's Press first printing. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
