Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. [1st ed., 1st printing] vii, 243 pages illustrations 23 cm. OCLC 716526 LC KD373.P45 H37 ; red cloth, no dustjacket ; "Except, perhaps, for the more recent Dreyfus affair, no criminal case of the nineteenth century has so profoundly stirred society as that revealed at the Court of assizes in Brabant, on the 22nd of December, 1882, where sentence of death was passed on the brothers Armand and Leon Peltzer for the wilful murder of Guillaume Bernays." ; "The Peltzer case , it is the most astounding true record ever penned" ; On the 7th of January, 1882, M. Bernays, a dis- tinguishedBelgian barrister, disappeared from Antwerp. On the morning of thatday he went with his little boy to school and then took the train for Brussels. He had a ticket for the Rue de la Loi station, and there it is supposed he left the train. Nothing more was heard or seen of him for ten days, When the public prosecutor of Antwerp received a letter postmarked Basle, written in English and signed simply " Vaughan, " which stated that the writer had seen accounts of M. Bernays' disappearance in the Belgian papers, and felt himself bound to explain it. He proceeded to say that M. Bernays had visited him, the writer, at his house, 159 Rue de la Loi, where he had a collection of fire-arms, being a collector. In showing his visitor a pistol he alleged that he accidentally shot him. The police immediately went to the house described as the scene of the accident, but found it necessary to enter by breaking a window, as the black- smith could not pick the door-lock. In a small parlour they found the body of M. Bernays sitting in an arm- chair, where it had probably been placed after death. Decomposition had set in and had reached an advanced stage. However, the body was immediately recognised by the public prosecutor and a neighbour who had been well acquainted with the deceased. A letter lay upon the table addressed " To the Coroner of the city of Brussels," containing a second description of the accident, also written in English and signed " Vaughan.". ; scarce edition ; G. Book.

  • Seller image for A complete collection of state-trials, and proceedings for high-treason . the fourth edition; commencing with the eleventh year of the reign of King Richard II. and ending with the sixteenth year of the reign of King George III. . To which is prefixed, a new preface, By Francis Hargrave. Volume the Fifth. (Odd volume). Famous Trials of Capt. Kidd & Col. Nicholas Bayard for sale by Antipodean Books, Maps & Prints, ABAA

Hardcover. Condition: Very good condition. Fourth edition. Trials of pirate Captain Kidd, and New York colonial politician Nicholas Bayard, complete in itself. Captain William Kidd (c.1654 1701) was a Scottish sailor who was tried and executed for piracy, although some modern historians note that relegating him to the role of pirate and putting him on trial was a maneuver used by politicians of the day to deflect attention from their own questionable roles in privateering. Here Kidd testifies that he has French passes, which would have provided proof that he worked as a privateer and not a pirate: "I beg your Lordship's Patience till I can procure my Papers. I had a Couple of French Passes, which I must make use of in order to my Justification" (p287). Kidd was not allowed to retrieve his papers; he was found guilty on all charges (murder and piracy) and sentenced to death. (pp287-339). In 1910 at the British Public Records archives, the French passes were found that Captain Kidd claimed would prove his innocence. The second trial of note included here is that of Colonel Nicholas Bayard, p419-440. Bayard, the 16th mayor of New York City, was accused in 1702 of high treason before Chief Justice William Atwood, on the basis of a remonstrance signed by him and others, considered to be libelous. Bayard was sentenced to death, but after the death of the New York governor and the corrupt Chief Justice, the proceedings were annulled, and Bayard's property and name were cleared. Volume 5 of 6 volumes. Folio, 852pp (text printed in 2 columns, each numbered as if a separate page). Deaccessed by the NY Association of the Bar Library, with their stamp on the title page. Pale green cloth with leather gilt spine labels, and paper label. Spine slightly sunned, labels chipped . OCLC: 1360856.
