Contact seller5-star sellerThe Limited Editions Club signed limited edition of Thomas Hardyâs fourth published novel. Octavo, bound in three-quarters modern morocco by Morrell with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, title page vignette, illustrated with black and white wood engravings.…Boldly signed by illustrator Agnes Miller Parker on the colophon page at the rear. One of 1,500 numbered copies, this is number 331. In fine condition. Introduction by Robert Cantwell. Illustrated by Agnes Miller Parker. Parker was a distinguished 20th-century British illustrator whose wood engravings, marked by their rhythmic line work and expressive detail, brought a modernist sensibility to classical and literary texts, particularly in her acclaimed collaborations with the Gregynog Press and author H.E. Bates' works Through the Woods (1936)ÂandÂDown the River (1937). Accompanied by a wood-engraved black and white print signed in pencil by Agnes Miller Parker and dated 1958 laid in at the rear. Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd (1874) is a landmark novel that introduces readers to his fictional Wessex, a rural landscape that plays a central role in shaping the lives of its characters. The novel explores themes of love, independence, and the consequences of human choices through the story of Bathsheba Everdene, a strong-willed woman who navigates a complex web of relationships with three very different suitors. Hardy contrasts individual desires with social expectations, highlighting the challenges women face in a patriarchal society.
