About this Item: Simon and Schuster, 1961. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very attractive copy of the First American Edition; Publisher's blue cloth hardcover binding, gilt titles & author's facsimile signature on the front cover still bright & perfectly legible; corners square & sharp but for the top rear fore edge, a small bump; top edge of the boards slightly faded just a thin line across the top. Text clean & unmarked, red endpapers clean & without signatures or names; top edge tinted red, just very light fading towards the spine but really quite good looking. Dust Jacket just about perfect, no tears or snags, a bit of rubbing, light wrinkle lines along the margins, shows use but no abuse or extraordinary flaws; the flaps are white coated paper, the front, spine & rear are printed over almond coating, giving the jacket a lightly tanned quality; price has been clipped; looks great in a fresh crystal clear Mylar DJ protector. 6.2" x 9.2"; 390 pages. From Wikipedia the free online encyclopedia: "Fate Is the Hunter is a 1961 memoir by aviation writer Ernest K. Gann. It describes his years working as a pilot from the 1930s to 1950s, starting at American Airlines in Douglas DC-2s and DC-3s when civilian air transport was in its infancy, moving onto wartime flying in C-54s, C-87s, and Lockheed Lodestars, and finally at Matson Navigation's short-lived upstart airline and various post-World War II "nonscheduled" airlines in Douglas DC-4s. On its publication, in reviewing the book, Martin Caidin wrote that his reminiscences "stand excitingly as individual chapter-stories, but the author has woven them superbly into a lifetime of flight." Roger Bilstein, in a history of flight, says that of books that discuss airline operations from the pilot's point of view, "few works of this genre equal E. K. Gann's 'Fate Is the Hunter,' which strikingly evokes the atmosphere of air transport flying during the 1930s." In 2019, playwright David Mamet, a pilot himself, wrote that Fate Is the Hunter is "the best book written about aviation". . . . Ernest Kellogg Gann (October 13, 1910 December 19, 1991) was an American aviator, author, sailor, and conservationist. He is known for his novels Island in the Sky and The High and the Mighty and his classic memoir of early commercial aviation Fate Is the Hunter, all of which were made into major motion pictures. Gann described his writing methods as torturous; he would often literally chain himself to his desk until he finished a certain amount of text. He suffered long periods of writer's block, and frequently worried that he would run out of ideas. Despite his successful career, he continued to have strong feelings of self-doubt and often expressed surprise at the critical praise he received. Gann's major works include the novel The High and the Mighty and his aviation memoir Fate Is the Hunter (regarded by many as one of the best-ever books about aviation). Notes and short stories scribbled during long layovers on his journeys across the North Atlantic became the source for his first serious fiction novel, Island in the Sky (1944), which was inspired by an actual Arctic rescue mission. It became an immediate best-seller as did Blaze of Noon (1946), a story about early air mail operations. His comprehensive autobiography entitled A Hostage to Fortune was published in 1978. Although many of his 21 best-selling novels reveal Gann's devotion to aviation, others, including Twilight for the Gods, and Fiddler's Green display his love of the sea. His experiences as a fisherman, skipper and sailor, all contributed storylines and depth to his nautical fiction. He later wrote an autobiography of his sailing life named Song of the Sirens. Gann wrote, or adapted from his books, the stories and screenplays for several movies and television shows. For some of these productions he also served as a consultant and technical adviser during filming. Although it received positive reviews, Gann was displeased with the movie version of Fate Is the Hunter . . .". Seller Inventory # 002348
