Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: G+ to VG-. Late 19th Century Edition. This antique piano/vocal score is in English only, with no attribution to either the libretto or the translation. The 1887 date is speculation on my part, but the original owner, one Stephen Chase, has signed the cover and dated his acquisition as "May 25, 1887". CONTENTS: internal title page, Table of Characters, Outline of Sections; 372 pages. CONDITION: this copy shows its age rather well, though the covers are soiled and shelf-worn, with a couple edge/corner chips. It appears that the front cover has been reattached with near-invisible archival tape. The interior, in contrast, is unmarked but for the names of two singers in the margin next to the characters Margaret and Faust [Mrs. Henschel & Geo. J. Parker]. It is otherwise uncompromised, with only the faintest hint of age-tanning. This very collectible and usable copy is now in a clear, snug, protective polypropylene bag with backing board.

Hardcover. Very Good: shows only little discernible wear, but there are two tiny gouges in the front panel; the backstrip and the portion of the rear panel near the hinge have been rather heavily sunned and the top edge of the panels has blanched a bit as well (the gilt titles at the backstrip are still bold and bright, but the blanching to the backstrip has lessened their visibility somewhat. The front panel and its titles are unaffected: bold and clearly legible); the corner tips are a mite 'soft', but no apparent bumping. The binding leans slightly, but remains perfectly secure; the text shows very sparse pencil marks, and the pages have tanned slightly, due to aging; former owner's name at the top of the front free endpaper. A flawed, but handsome copy: structurally sound and tightly bound: clean, sturdy, presentable, despite the sunning. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. Large Format 4to. vi, 323 pages. Libretto by J. Barbier and M. Carre. Vocal Score containing the Complete Ballet-Music by Leo Delibes. Translated by H.T. Chorley, Revised and Completed by Dr. Th. Baker. Essay on the Story of the Opera by H.E. Krehbiel. Ed. 549. Green cloth over boards with gilt titles at the front panel and backstrip. Decorated Endpapers. First Edition; later printing (probably in the 1950s). Hardback: Lacks DJ. First Edition; later printing (probably in the 1950s).

Soft cover. Condition: New. Berlioz' operatic masterpiece is now performed regularly in concert halls worldwide, despite the poor reception received at it Paris premiere in 1846. This is a new, digitally-enhanced, corrected reprint of the score originally issued in 1911 by Costallat & Cie., Paris. Charles Malherbe prepared the piano reduction to serve as a companion vocal score for the full score issued as part of the Berlioz Complete edition - ultimately left incomplete thanks in part to Malherbe's passing in the very year this score was issued. This very readable A4-sized vocal score will be appreciated by performers, students and Berlioz aficionados everywhere. The matching full score, study score and orchestra parts are also available from Serenissima Music.

Représenté pour la première fois a Paris sur le Théatre Royal de l'Opéra-Comique le 31 Octobre 1838 Partition Piano et Chant: 15 francs. [Piano-vocal score]. Paris: Bichault [PN 4932 R.], [ca. 1900]. 1f. (recto title, verso blank), 1f. (blank), [i] (contents), 102, [i] (blank), 103-240, [i] (blank), [i] (decorative device) pp. Large octavo. Quarter red leather with textured red cloth, spine in decorative compartments gilt, titling gilt, decorative endpapers. Binding slightly worn; remnants of label to spine. Browned; occasional foxing; some leaves trimmed; several leaves partially detached; some signatures split; annotation in pencil to verso of free front endpaper; small publisher's facsimile handstamp to upper margin of first page of music. First performed, to a libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré after Carré's Faust et Marguerite and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust, Part I (in the French translation by Gérard de Nerval) in Paris at the Théâtre Lyrique on 19 March 1859. To most opera lovers today, Gounod is essentially the composer of Faust and Roméo et Juliette and with good reason, for it would be difficult to defend the critical position that these are not his best works for the stage."
