Paper Ephemera. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Please note: David Hockney either chose not to contribute two Easter Eggs (the two wooden ones in this collection are unpainted) - or was unavailable to do so - to The White House for its 1989 Annual Easter Egg Roll (see Provenance, below description). Offered are four items: 1) Original Signed Letter on White House stationery from Debra Romash, Director, Visitors Office, The White House, dated February 21, 1989 (George H. W. Bush Administration) to artist David Hockney requesting his participation in the upcoming White House Easter Egg Roll, to be held on Monday, March 27, 1989, by painting two wooden Easter eggs. Measuring 8-1/2" by by 11", the letter reads in part: "Many of America's leading artists and cartoonists have agreed to paint their own special egg for the Egg Roll. These unique wooden eggs will be displayed, on the South Lawn the day of the event, in a special case created by the staff of the Smithsonian Institution. We hope you will join us in this celebration and paint an egg." 2) photocopied, as mailed, "FACT SHEET - ARTISTS" providing instructions (the first reads, "1. Enclosed are two eggs for decoration. One egg is for the permanent collection and the other egg is for the travelling collection." 3-4) Two original (unpainted) wooden Easter Eggs. The letter and Fact Sheet were previously folded twice for mailing purposes, very light wear; one of the unpainted wooden eggs shows a few chew marks (see Provenance, below). Provenance: I purchased this letter, along with the accompanying fact sheet and two wooden eggs as well as its container, a small cardboard mailing box (the box destroyed by my new puppy at the time - there are chew marks on one of the wooden eggs), along with several other David Hockney-related items, at a garage sale in West Hollywood in 1991 given by a young man who then worked at Data-Boy, now a long-defunct gay male bar publication, with its office located next to David Hockney's office on Santa Monica Boulevard and who had, on a few occasions, gone through their trash bin and removed several items of paper ephemera such as these.
