Da quelle due parole in poi, la fiaba ebraica si dipana sospesa in un tempo che non è dato immaginare, libera dai confini d'ogni concepibile realtà, dove si nutre ogni illusione fuorché quella di collocare la storia in qualche «dove» o «quando». Respirano da sempre la Diaspora, ch'è esilio e dispersione al tempo stesso, oltre che ascolto di lingue e atmosfere diverse: le fiabe risentono indubbiamente di ciò che hanno intorno, si tratti di arabeschi profumati d'oriente o litanie della fredda Europa continentale, ma anche di Roma antica o Costantinopoli dai fasti cosmopoliti. Spesso le fiabe ebraiche partono da un versetto biblico o vi arrivano. Altre volte, la Bibbia è negli echi, nei rimandi che il lettore attento o l'ascoltatore devoto sono in grado di cogliere. Ironia, a tratti verace umorismo, sommessa distanza dalla realtà, profonda saggezza e inguaribile pazienza sono le virtú delle fiabe ebraiche siano esse echi di adagi biblici o rifacimenti di motivi stranieri.
