Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Rarely seen in the UK, this is the book that introduced Andrei Platonov to the English-speaking world. It includes seven unusual stories: Dzhan, Fro, The Potudan River, Homecoming, The Third Son, Aphrodite and The Fierce and Beautiful World. The book's printed on good quality paper and is well-bound, with no markings to the text. There's a small stain to the outer bottom corner of pages 109-152, there's a little bit of spotting to the endpapers and some faint dust-mottling around the outer edge of the pages when viewed as a block. The black and orange boards are solid with only minimal rubbing, but have likewise got a little bit dusty. The dust-jacket is not price-clipped, but there's a faint crease down nearly all of the length of the front inner flap, near its edge. There's some rubbing along the top and bottom edges and some fraying at the corners. The jacket is also darkened in places with handling and age. The introduction by Yevgeny Yevtushenko praises Platonov as a master: "He belongs among the delayed-action writers, whose talent is like a safety fuse which runs many years in length. This fuse smolders unseen but persistent, staying dry even under the drizzle of time, until finally a blinding explosion destroys bridges that had seemed built for eternity." A clever description, which resonates right through to the end of the book.
