Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany (1878-1957), was an Anglo-Irish writer and dramatist; his work, mostly in the fantasy genre, was published under the name Lord Dunsany. His oeuvre includes many hundreds of published short stories, as well as plays, novels and essays. He achieved great fame and success with his early short stories and plays, and during the 1910s was considered one of the greatest living writers of the English-speaking world; he is today best known for his 1924 fantasy novel The King of Elfland's Daughter and The Gods of Pegana, wherein he devised his own fictional pantheon and laid the groundwork for the fantasy genre. He was the inventor of an asymmetric version of chess called Dunsany's chess. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Seller: Robert Eldridge, Bookseller, Elizabethtown, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Dunsany, Lord. Fifty-one Tales. London: Elkin Mathews, 1919. Third printing. Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii-viii 1-111 [112: printer's imprint]. Original gray boards with gray linen shelf back, front and spine panels stamped in black, top edge rough trimmed, other edges untrimmed. Illustrated with a photograph portrait of the author (in uniform) inserted at the frontispiece with a facsimile of his signature. The old ownership signature ("Dorothy Lawton") on the front free endpaper may refer to the former first head librarian of the NYPL's music collection. A good copy. #3374. $25. This collection of very short pieces was first published in 1916, as was the author's landmark Tales of Wonder, which began the author's pivot away from his pre-war fantasies with their characteristically Irish blend of the exuberant and the wistful. After the war Dunsany turned to more realistic settings for his novels (while still coaxing fantastic growths from them). For his stories, he took refuge in the clubroom tall tales of Jorkens, where the mood shifts away from that pre-war self-confidence that let Dunsany manufacture such richly jeweled worlds -- however much his tragi-comic vision always could be heard (by the alert) whispering to the reader that the author knew quite well he was making this all up out of nothing. The war knocked him off that tight-rope. Against the new flat disillusionment of post-war Britain Jorkens fired his defiantly blatant fabrications, lubricated by good (and complimentary) whiskies. These stories allowed Dunsany an authorial distance (not bereft of sympathy and pity for his down-at-heel hero) that he evidently felt no need for in the pre-war world.
