Paperback. Condition: Very Good. "Wonderful.a book that connects us to the global story of ourselves." -Sandra Cisneros In this beautifully written, highly original work, John Phillip Santos- the author of Places Left Unfinished at the Time of Creation-creates a virtuosic meditation on ancestry and origins. Weaving together a poetic mix of family remembrance, personal odyssey, conquest history, and magical realism, Santos recounts his quest to find the missing chronicle of his mother's family, who arrived in southern Texas in the 1620s. As Santos traces their roots to northern Spain, he re-imagines the way we think about identity. The result is a uniquely engaging adventure in the frontier between self and family, past and present, at a time when breakthroughs in genetics are changing our window on history.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. You can't escape fate, no matter how fast you run. That was a lesson hard learned for me.I spent years trying to bury my past, but my future held skeletons bleaker than the ones I'd left behind.Darkness follows me everywhere I go, hanging over my shoulders like a scythe. A byproduct of my bad karma. For so long, I refused to even look at my hometown on a postcard. That is until trouble comes knocking at my door, and I'm forced to move to the one place I've been avoiding like the plague.Ares Alsford, my deepest regret, and most painful memory is the one I need to stay away from at all costs. But I'd be naive to think old wounds stay closed when you scratch them, and I fear my presence back in the city he ran me out of is going to cause more shock waves than I can handle. One thing's for sure, though.I might be broken, but I refuse to bend, regardless of how hard he tries to hurt me. Lick of Fire is a complete standalone and a part of the City of Stars series.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. What if the asteroid heading toward Earth in Tommy Wallach's New York Times bestselling novel, We All Looked Up, actually hit and demolished our planet? What if, after thousands of years, two civilizations rose from the ashes? What if those cities found out about each other? Through the viewpoints of multiple characters, Strange Fire describes the beginnings of an inevitable war between these two civilizations, a war that will pit faith against science, zealotry against technology.and brother against brother. They said that the first generation of man was brought low by its appetites: for knowledge, for power, for wealth. It was so great, the Lord sent his own Daughter to bring fire and devastation to the world. Brothers Clive and Clover Hamill, the sons of a well-respected Descendant minister, have spent their lives spreading that gospel. But when their traveling ministry discovers a community called Sophia that's intent on rediscovering the blasphemous technologies of the past, a chain of events will be set in motion. Alongside Gemma Poplin, Clive's childhood sweetheart, and Paz Dedios, a revolutionary who dreams of overthrowing the Descendancy, Clive's and Clover's paths will diverge, and each will play a part in determining the fate of humanity itself.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. On the wild river that divides Namibia from Angola, members of the Himba tribe herd cattle as they have done for hundreds of years. The women wear thick coils of jewelry and skirts of animal skin; there are monkeys in the palm trees and love birds breed nearby. Where Fire Speaks documents the lives of the Himba, and time spent around the fire, where it is believed their ancestors reside, speaking to them and connecting them to their past. But the world of the Himba sits in the shadow of third-world development and the inevitability of change that threatens their way of life; now, they are more likely to attend evangelical church services, congregate around the liquor trader's truck, journey to the big town to visit the hospital, and pose for tourists' photographs. Sandra Shields and David Campion spent two months living with the Himba, and this book, a provocative melding of images and narrative, tells the kind of story that other publications mention only in passing, the story that is the unspoken subtext of many a travel adventure. The profound changes in the lives of the Himba--both gradual and immediate#8212which the authors bear witness to are a testament to those effecting indigenous people around the world. Where Fire Speaks also takes an unflinching look at what we do in order to satisfy our obsession with documenting the exotic "other." The act of taking photographs lies at the heart of this book. The terrain being explored here is caught in the question that one Himba headman put to a film crew: "Why are you all so interested in us, anyway?" Full of small revelations and grand gestures, Where Fire Speaks is a new kind of photo documentary book which depicts the once-exotic frontier as a place of great human truths. It provides a unique opportunity for readers to stand with the Himba and experience for themselves the meaning of the contact zone. Includes more than 100 black and white photographs. Winner, Hubert Evans Prize for Non-fiction.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Judith Roche's fourth collection of poems, All Fire All Water, consists of four parts. Rivers Have Memories, the first part, explores nature and our relationship to it. Poems include fish and birds, bees and wolves, storms and the changing of the seasons. Drawing from the Salish Sea, where Roche lives, the Pacific Ocean, and the northern Great Lakes, these poems are steeped in water. But there's plenty of the fire of passion in this collection as well. In A Bird Caught in the Throat, Roche turns to The Face of War and the horrors of unnecessary suffering; e.g., the blood for oil the 20th and 21st century have brought us. She writes of a usually well-intentioned friend from her liberal church who says she would torture those who are cruel to animals. In Hoffa she invokes a childhood memory of the unthinking pain adults can inflict on children, in this case, James Hoffa (the son, not his famous father) in the 11th grade. In The Husbands Sweet, a play on suite, she looks back from a great distance to a marriage both painful and beloved. These poems are in turn ironic, playful, rueful, and humorous, but still keep all of the sorrow intact. There are poems of other assignations after the bitter breakup of the marriage. The final section is We Are Stardust, the title taken from the Joni Mitchell song. These poems pose existential questions and explorations of identity and the possibilities of honest communication with others. Roche has a nonverbal, handicapped son and these poems are informed by some of the frustration of communication with him, other than that infused by profound love. She wonders if we can understand the nonverbal language of other creatures, especially crows, and the possibility of bridging the gaps between us and other sentient beings, including ancient beings. In Linear B and Linear A she tries to understand ancient Greece, the culture and the people, through what we know of their language. In Metaphors of Dust, she explores where we come from: As it turns out, we actually are stardust./ I thought it was a metaphor/ of life and space and time./ Apparently, our materials are 13 million years old./ We are star stuff pondering the story/ told in the life of the stars.Throughout this collection, the poems are infused with the music of the language in careful interplay of assonance and consonance.…
