First separate edition. Inscribed by Morison on the front blank. Small octavo. [vi], 29, [1] pp. Publisher's tan cloth with brown spine and cover lettering, original typographic dust jacket. The jacket might be price clipped (but as both corners are chopped it is difficult to say), miniscule wear to jacket spine ends. A beautiful copy. Fresh and cleanInscribed by Morison to John H. Winchester, noted collector (Johnson has written his name under the front flap as well. This hallmark publication first appeared as an essay in The Fleuron. On the front jacket flap we find out that it was at the urging of John Johnson, printer at Oxford University Press, that this smaller and handier edition was issued. A fine commendation by Bruce Rogers on the front of the jacket "The clearest and most closely-reasoned exposition of the subject that I know.".
