Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, octavo, 91 p., 118 p., 252 p., and 28 p. respectively. ***CONTENT: Henry Darwin Rogers (1808-1866) was a celebrated American geologist, chemist, and educator, and regarded as the foremost structural geologist of his time (Merrill). In 1836, he was appointed State Geologist of Pennsylvania; Rogers' reputation chiefly rests on his work done in this connection. Save for a handful of Legislative and mining reports, Rogers' six "Annual Reports" are the earliest detailed geological field surveys of the State, and they are scarce. The four reports offered herein deal with nearly all aspects of geology: areal studies of various regions and counties; scenery and topography; location, extent, and descriptions of rock formations; structural geology (dip of strata, folds, faults, etc.); mineral resources of the strata, with attention to economic commodities (coal, iron ores, building stones, agricultural materials, etc.); soils; fossil-bearing strata; and more. ***CONDITION: The four reports are complete and in Good to Very Good condition. All are firmly bound in the original stitched bindings and are without wraps. The text pages are typically fresh, clean, and bright; the pages of the fourth report show light, occasional foxing, and the page fore-edges are bumped. The text in the sixth report is clean but mildly toned. Two reports show previous ownership stamps on the title page, the other two show no past ownership indications. This is a sound, useful collection of rare early American geology reports. Nickles 886. Prime 40. Ward and Carozzi 1746. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.
