Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition, First Printing. A first edition of Robert Payne's lyrical guide to the history and landscape of the young state of Israel, inscribed by the author. This is a significant association copy, inscribed on the title page to Ben Raeburn, the influential publisher and head of Horizon Press. Key Features: +++ Visuals: Illustrated with 28 pages of photographic reproductions and detailed map endpapers drawn by Lilli Mautner. +++ Content: Written with Payne's characteristic flair for history and mythology, the book covers the sweep of Israeli geography from the Negev to Jerusalem, capturing the nation just 15 years after its founding. +++ Association: Inscribed in ink on the title page: 'For Ben / affectionately from / Robert'. (Ben Raeburn). +++ Imprint & Physical Specs: New York, Evanston, and London: Harper & Row, 1963.Blue cloth hardcover in original dust jacket.9.5 inches tall / [5], 222 pages (includes Index) First Edition, First Condition: Very Good in Good Dust Jacket. The binding is tight and square. Text is clean with light, even age-toning. The cloth boards show sunning/fading at the spine and edges. The dust jacket is price-clipped ($6.50 intact) but shows visible wear, including chipping at the edges and darkening to the spine panel. Robert Payne was a prolific biographer and historian, best known for his The Splendor of Greece. This work captures Israel in a specific historical moment (1963)prior to the Six-Day War of 1967, offering a view of the country's borders and atmosphere during its developmental teenage years. The provenance of this copy elevates it above a standard travelogue. Ben Raeburn (Horizon Press) was a central figure in mid-century publishing, most famous for being Frank Lloyd Wright's publisher and friend. An affectionate inscription between Payne and Raeburn represents a connection between two heavyweights of the New York literary world. Keywords: Robert Payne, Israel History, Ben Raeburn, Association Copy, Signed Book, Holy Land, Horizon Press, Travelogue, Jewish History, 1960s Israel.

Originally published in English by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, New York in 1972. Translated from the Spanish by Ben Belitt. A publisher's review copy, with review slip loosely laid in. Publication date given as October 29 1973. ***Near fine in light-brown cloth-covered boards, with chocolate-brown titles on the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. No creases or tears to the cloth - just very slight creasing to the tail of the spine.Corners sharp. No reading lean to the spine. Spine tight. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. No creases or tears. Pages clean. ***In a near fine illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £3.45. The dustwrapper is complete, with no creases, chips or tears - just slight rubbing at the edges. There is a small light stain at the base of the spine. No fading. ***184 pages including Author's Foreword, Author's Note and Translator's Foreword. 208mm x 142mm. ***'Neruda describes this, his sole work for the theatre, as "a jeu d'esprit, a melodrama, an opera, a pantomime, a tragedy." This edition presents the original Spanish text and Ben Belitt's translation on facing pages. There is an introduction by Mr. Belitt. Mr. Neruda, who was recently awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, has written, in addition to his Foreword to the play, an essay "Why Joaquin Murieta?"' (Quote taken from the back flap of the dustwrapper). ***'Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto (12 Jul 1904 - 23 Sep 1973), better known by his pen name and, later, legal name Pablo Neruda, was a Chilean poet-diplomat and politician who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. Neruda became known as a poet when he was 13 years old, and wrote in a variety of styles, including surrealist poems, historical epics, overtly political manifestos, a prose autobiography, and passionate love poems such as the ones in his collection "Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair (1924). Neruda occupied many diplomatic positions in various countries during his lifetime and served a term as a Senator for the Chilean Communist Party. When President Gabriel González Videla outlawed communism in Chile in 1948, a warrant was issued for Neruda's arrest. Friends hid him for months in the basement of a house in the port city of Valparaíso, and in 1949 he escaped through a mountain pass near Maihue Lake into Argentina; he would not return to Chile for more than three years. He was a close advisor to Chile's socialist President Salvador Allende, and, when he got back to Chile after accepting his Nobel Prize in Stockholm, Allende invited him to read at the Estadio Nacional before 70,000 people. Neruda was hospitalized with cancer in September 1973, at the time of the coup d'état led by Augusto Pinochet that overthrew Allende's government, but returned home after a few days when he suspected a doctor of injecting him with an unknown substance for the purpose of murdering him on Pinochet's orders. Neruda died at his home in Isla Negra on 23 September 1973, just hours after leaving the hospital. Although it was long reported that he died of heart failure, the Interior Ministry of the Chilean government issued a statement in 2015 acknowledging a Ministry document indicating the government's official position that "it was clearly possible and highly likely" that Neruda was killed as a result of "the intervention of third parties". However, an international forensic test conducted in 2013 rejected allegations that he was poisoned. It was concluded that he had been suffering from prostate cancer."' (Wiki) ***A near fine collectable copy of this first UK edition. An uncommon book. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
