Albumblatt. Condition: Gut. Albumblatt von Ella Fitzgerald und Count Basie am 13. November 1980 im Continental mit rotem bzw. schwarzem Edding signiert /// Autogramm Autograph signiert signed signee /// Ella Jane Fitzgerald (* 25. April 1917[1][A 1] in Newport News, Virginia; ? 15. August 1904 in Red Bank, New Jersey; ? 26. /// Standort Wimregal Ill-Umschl2024-280 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 10.

Condition: Fine. Three leaves on Algonquin Hotel stationery, each measuring about 6" x 8." Neat flattened mailing folds, else fine. With the original mailing envelope, addressed in Fitzgerald's hand to WNEW radio DJ Dick Shepard, with her name inked ("E. Fitzgerald, Suite 1110") in her hand) on the verso of the envelope (with su…ite number 1110). Long rip to the envelope, going right through her name, but with no loss. An 8" x 10" photo of Fitzgerald and a group of seven white businessmen in suits, all surrounding a small table at what appears to be a New York restaurant. While two of the figures bear a distinct resemblance to Shepard, we are unsure whether there is any relationship between the photograph and the letter (though they came to us together). Photograph gently curled; near fine. A remarkable letter, the kind that rarely comes to market. At the time of writing (June 30, 1958), Fitzgerald had just recently done a guest appearance on Dick Shepard's midnight music program, "Milkman's Matinee," where she had been the guest disc jockey. The letter reads, in full (edited slightly for clarity): "Hello Dick, Well, this is the first chance I've had to sit down + read over some of the letters that came in since I was on your program. I just [emphasized] had to write this to you + to thank [emphasized] you so very very much for an enjoyable morning. Besides playing the records it's such a wonderful feeling to know one has a true friend + that's the way I feel about you. Thanks once again for having me on your program. The letters were so nice--each one--that I've tried to answer each one personally + thanking fans. I answered all of those you sent me. You know thru reading those letters I think of sometimes when I'm blue + tired + feel let down I pick up + read how so many people get pleasure + joy from my recordings I feel ashamed because it's like I've let them down + so, I'll try to remember + be grateful for fans + friends like you + try to keep making the kind of records I hope they will continue to enjoy. Hope you can understand this as I'm the nervous type + I write very fast. Sometimes I can't even read my own writing (smiles). Once again very sincere + from my heart thanks to you + to all the fans who wrote in + those letters which I did not receive to answer. Think you could use a lady disk jockey again? Any time I'm available (smiles). Sincerely, Ella Fitzgerald." In 1956 Fitzgerald had released an album entitled "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book." This collection of show tunes, produced by her manager Norman Granz with a large studio orchestra and released on the Verve label, launched the artist beyond the jazz world and into mainstream popular culture. Over the next half decade, she would release several more albums in the same format, based on the music of Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, and some others. These records are certainly among those which must have resonated with the fans who had written into WNEW. Fitzgerald had a long career in the public eye, and she was not stingy with her autograph; signed photographs and clipped signatures are not difficult to obtain. She was, however, a notoriously shy and private person offstage, and did not, like some of her jazz contemporaries, burn the midnight oil and make a thousand friends after hours at the clubs where she performed. When typed or autograph letters appear in the trade, they tend to be of a short and polite nature. By contrast, this letter, in which Fitzgerald talks openly about her self-doubt as a singer and performer, has no comparables in the auction record that we could find. A rare and significant letter from one of the great jazz performers--and recording artists--of the 20th century.
