The top of the spine has some loss, not affecting the title. There is minor loss to the bottom edge. The back cover top and bottom edges have tiny closed tears and rubs. There is a small tape mark to the top edge. The bottom edge has a 2 and 1/2 cm closed tear. All four corners have small chips. The front and rear flap top edges are curled. Not price cut. The rear of the jacket is reasonably clean.

The front board right hand top and bottom edges are bumped slightly. There are bumps to the bottom edge. The gilt lettering on the front board and spine is bold and clear. The rear board has some marks in white and red. the front end paper has a small inscription. The text block is foxed and this has spread to the margins of the first few pages and to some later pages. The binding is tight. Dust wrapper/ The front cover has a triangle surface loss above the author. The right hand top and bottom corners have minor loss The top and bottom edges are rubbed and the top edge has a crease running along the entire edge. The front flap hinge is rubbed with a 6cm split in the middle. The top and bottom of the spine has some loss not affecting the title or author. The back cover top and bottom left hand corners are rubbed with minor loss. The top edge of the rear flap is curled with tiny chips. Not price cut. The rear of the jacket has some red marks and there is minor staining to the bottom edge.

There is soiling to the front and rear boards, with light fraying to the spine tips. Internally, there is a contemparary inscription to the front paste-down. Signed by Enid Blyton on one of her official book-plates to the front end-paper. The inner pages are generally clean with the odd sporadic mark found throughout the text. The dust-wrapper is in good or slightly better condition, with loss to the spine tips, there is also a chip to the bottom centre of the front panel, with smaller chipping to the corners of the front and rear folds. Toning to the spine, but the red lettering is un-faded. Correctly priced at 5/-net. Both the front and rear flaps are the wider format, denoting the correct first edition status.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. HARDBACK - A very good or better book with a tiny area of fading to the tip and tail of the spine. There is a little mottling to the front and rear boards, as is common with this title, but the blue boards are clean and fresh. Internally, the inner text is lightly toned due to the paper stock used in the books publication, but overall clean with just a couple of foxing spots to the page block. Free of any previous owner names or inscriptions. The dust wrapper is in very good condition with a chip to the tip of the spine, not affecting the lettering, also with a chip to the top centre of the front panel, with a slightly larger chip to the top corner of the front flap fold. There are closed tears, with associated light creases to the upper front and rear panels, with three small marks present to the rear panel. A very clean dust wrapper for its age with absolutely no restoration performed, with lovely colouring to the spine and to the front panel, also with a very clean rear panel. The dust wrapper has the wider flaps, denoting a correct first issue publication. The publishers printed price of 5/-net is present to the front flap.

First edition, first printing. Original light blue cloth with black titles to upper board and spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with line drawings throughout by Eileen A. Soper. A very good copy, the binding firm with the usual bumping of the thin boards and mottling to the blue cloth. The contents, with a previous owner's name to the front endpaper and only the occasional foxing spot are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the lightly rubbed dustwrapper that has a few tiny nicks at the spine tips and a single short closed tear (without loss) to the lower spine fold. The dustwrapper remains very clean and bright, albeit heavily faded to the red lettering on the spine, and entirely without repair or restoration. Not price-clipped (5/- net to the lower front flap). An attractive, unsophisticated example, scarce thus. The first edition, first printing of the first adventure of the Famous Five.
