In the publisher's red diagonal fine-ribbed cloth binding, with beveled boards; white, silver, and black-st…amped ruled and ornamental borders, around a full-cover vignette of a great house garden with framing vine-covered branches and spider's web, and decorative titling on the front panel; white and silver-stamped ruled bands, white, silver, and black-stamped ornamental bands and devices, and decorative titling on the spine; and blind-stamped ruled and ornamental borders with ornamental corners, and a central ornamental device on the rear panel. Typical light toning to the contents, with some mild creasing to the rear flyleaf and a partially scuffed out inscription to the front pastedown. The boards are fresh and bright, with some very light fading along the spine. Better than very good. Provenance: from the Publishers' Bookbindings collection of Ellen K. Morris and Edward S. Levin.

Many additional sheets of annotations and notes bound in. 5…0 plates, numbered 1-49 plus 25A (the final printed version only contained 47 plates). The descriptions of plates 47, 48 & 49 are hand written. Name of author's son to front free endpaper. The first edition of Elvin's important work on heraldry are scarce in any form, bit this is a unique copy filled with the author's notes and annotations. lix, 134 pages.
