Jacket a tad rubbed and edgeworn, with chip on rear panel, but complete and attractive; ownership name/address inkstamp on front pastedown. Tight and nice facsimile reprint of this thick 1887 fiction by the decorated officer with the 65th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (1841-1905) who penned the highly-regarded "Story of the Sherman Brigade" (1897) and clearly knew whereof he spoke. Its popularity prompted another soldier/author, John McElroy (1846-1929), to write the Civil War novel "Si Klegg: His Transformation from a Raw Recruit to a Veteran" (1910).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. George Y. Coffin (illustrator). Editor Gerald J. Prokopowicz, writing in Lincoln Lore, Number 1846, says the book âremains a treasure not nearly as well known as it deserves among those interested in the lives of Lincolnâs soldiers.â In his 2011 essay on âSi Kleggâs Civil Warâ on the Common Place website, Tyler Rudd Putnam calls Klegg âthe best-loved fictional veteran of the Civil Warâ and âa favorite among both veteran and civilian audiences.âThe book was written by Wilbur Hinman, who served for four years with the 65th Ohio Infantry, part of the Sherman Brigade, which, he writes in his preface, began the war with 1100 men and ended with 130. âThe vivid memories of those four eventful years have supplied all the materialâ for the book, he writes. Even though it is written as history, Si Kleggâs story is valued for its depiction of the everyday life of soldiers neglected by the typical histories. âHinman wrote the Civil War as most men experienced it,â says Putnam. â[T]here are few other sources that deal so explicitly with how Civil War soldiers adapted to their new material environmentâ"how they fried their salt pork, pitched their tents, and mended their clothes.â The history of Hinman and Springfieldâs own J. Warren Keifer are told in Robert Huntâs book, Good Men Who Won the War: Army of the Cumberland Veterans and Emancipation Memory. An Appendix (p. 692-706) includes a discussion of the factual background of the story, illustrations of the corp's badges, music for bugle calls, and two pages of "A Few Facts and Figures" from the war. First Thus. Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). 706 pages. Pages are unmarked and bright, though a bit toned from age. VG- hardcover bound in black cloth over boards. Faded red decorations and title embossed on front cover and spine. Corners are word with the boards peeking through at the tips. Spine shows some wear at the head and foot. The decorative end paper has split at the front hinge, although the fabric is holding, keeping the text block tight. No foxing in this copy, though I did see one spot on a page when leafing through. There is a gift inscription from 1895 written in pencil on the back of the free front end paper and a previous bookseller has written a price in pencil at the top of the first blank page of the text block. Page edges browned slightly. Illustrated with 193 engravings. Illustrator: George Y. Coffin. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Fiction; Civil War Period (1850-1877); United States; 19th century; Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 1120.
