Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. 1st Edition. A tribute to John McCrae (1872 -1918) & the famous war poem written in the Flanders fighting fields in 1915. This poem is perhaps the most famous ode, lament, anti-war diatribe in human history. The poem was composed after the death of a close friend / soldier at Flanders & was firs…t published in Punch magazine in December, 1915. Includes frontispiece archival photo of the Guelph-born physician / poet (1872 - 1918) protected with tissue guard. Also included an autograph facsimile of the war poem, other earlier poetry by McCrae, a sketch by him & a B&W photo. (ix) 141 pages. The second part of the book is a lengthy tribute to the shortened life of McCrae by friend Sir Andrew MacPhail entitled John McCrae - An Essay in Character. MacPhail (1864 - 1938) was a Canadian physician, professor, soldier, prolific writer & intellectual. No dust jacket if issued? Dark blue boards with gilt lettering on spine & face. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Minor corner rubbing. Internals clean, tight & unmarked. INSCRIBED & dated 1919 by MacPhail. With a character essay of McCrae by Sir Andrew Macphail. The well known poem 'In Flanders Fields' by McCrae published in facsimile on p15. Presentation copy given to W. Hastings And…erson, head of the Staff College in 1919 by James Dundas. Anderson [1872 - 1930] served in the 2nd Boer War and was Chief of Staff of the First Army in W.W.I. Dundas [1883 - 1966] was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1917. Sml 8vo, 168pp, blue cloth boards, gilt title on spine and front with decoration, frontis. Two silvertone photographs of the areas of Avelvy and Guedecourt from Guards Cemetery Les Boeufs, laid down with captions by Dundas. Both are cemeteries for fallen Allied forces. Light damp mark at top of one plate; pencil notation below poem 'The Anxious Dead' on p17, 'Aug-Nov 1918'. Spine rubbed at tips and corners, otherwise vgc.

Hardcover, bound in brown cloth titled in gilt on the front cover and the spine and with a vignette in gilt on the front cover. The covers are rubbed and bumped. 256 pages. The text block is cracked on…a couple of occasions. There is some minor damp staining to the front edge of the front endpaper and small ink stains to the bottom edge of pages 159-160. Good. First edition. Inscribed by the editor John W. Garvin on the front endpaper, "To Dear Cousin Kitty & Family, With the love and best wishes of John W. Garvin. New Year's, 1919". This 1918 work includes the first appearance in book form of John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Fields" on page 147, prior to its subsequent publication in the collection of John McCrae's poems titled "In Flanders Fields and Other Poems" which was published in 1919.
