Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First American edition. Faintest offsetting on the front endleaves else fine in a spine-tanned, very good or better dust jacket with a bit of light offsetting and several very small chips and tears. The story of an eccentric elderly Scottish woman living in a Glasgow tenement. A seemingly lighthearted story, but one that doesn't shy away from the darker elements of living in the slums of a large industrial city. Nicolson introduced the woman, Mrs. Ross, in his first book, 1961's *The Whisperers* (also published by Knopf) and here completes her story. The two books were the basis for the 1967 British film of the same name starring Edith Evans, for which she received the BAFTA Award, the Silver Bear for Best Actress award at the Berlin International Film Festival, the National Board of Review award, the New York Film Critics Circle award, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. Both novels seem oddly uncommon in the trade.
