This small book contains prose and poetry to help parents cope with the loss of a child, an event that was much more frequent in the e…ra in which this book was published. From the author's Introduction -- "The author of the little book here presented to the reader, has selected the name of SACRED FLORA, because the sentiments he wished to express, springing as they did around the grave of a precious child, seemed to him well symbolized by such memorial flowers as those to which allusion has been made; and he trusts, that thus gathered, they will be found truly the flowers of Christian thought and sentiment." Half-title is a beautiful chromolithograph with elaborate decoration, tissue guard present. All edges of text block are gilt. A very scarce book in this edition. This book is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Bound in dark brown cloth boards with blind stamped decoration on both covers, stamped pictorial gilt funerary urn on front cover, gilt floral decoration on spine. Covers have light soil, moderate wear at corners, spine ends slightly chipped, about 1/2 of cloth of front joint split with cover still firmly attached. All page edges are gilt. The contents are clean and complete in a good binding. Two gift inscriptions on the front free end paper, dated 1855 and 1892. *** 4.5 inches tall by 3 inches.
