He was born in Jamaica to English parents. In 1808, he settled in Paris and devoted himself to scientific studies. He undertook the education of his brother, Henri-Milne Edwards (who later became an eminent zoologist), and was particularly interested in ethnography, founding the Ethnography Society in 1839.
