Contemporary half brown calf, gilt decorated raised bands, moir silk boards, later leather label on spine bound by Fraser, Regent St. William Frdric Edwards (1777 Ğ 1842) has been referred to as 'The father of ethnology in France'. He was born in Jamaica to English parents. In 1808, he settled in Paris and devoted himself to scientific studies. He undertook the education of his brother, Henri-Milne Edwards (who later became an eminent zoologist), and was particularly interested in ethnography, founding the Ethnography Society in 1839. He published several works and was awarded prizes. Two leaves of rough handwritten biographical notes loosely inserted. Very small closed tear to inner part title-page not affecting text , slight rubbing to calf, otherwise very good. Slight rubbing, otherwise very good.
