Softcover. Condition: Very Good. Illustrated by Milton Gendel (illustrator). The lightest wear to edges, which shows with high contrast as the wraps are printed in black, overall. A very light wave to the text block near the fore edge.; US-born Milton Gendel (1918-2018) was a photographer and art critic who, beginning in 1949, lived and worked in Italy. This is his wide-ranging, partly biographical essay of what he experienced in life, his artistic milieu, and the artistic community fostered by wealthy patronage. It begins with Gendel and Robert Motherwell serving in the US Army in Italy, then moves through the Greenwich Village artistic community, loose groups, and salons underwritten by Peggy Guggenheim and other patrons. Much detail is devoted to the major and minor artists, critics, and hangers-on encountered through his path through the artistic life. The book is focused on people and events, including nothing of his own life-long artistic career as a world-traveling photographer. Inscribed and signed on the title page "For / John and Rosamund / from Milton / Rome / April 1 2000", likely to his fellow photographers John and Rosamund Macfarlane, known for award winning nature photographs. The cover and 4 plates are non-objective drawings from Milton's sketch books circa 1941-1943. The cover depicts surrealist poet Andre Breton, pontificating and posing in his hyperbolic manner before a curious audience. Text is in English and Italian, with the Italian translation by Simona Rossi and Gabriella Drudi. Edited by Simona Rossi and Valter Rossi. The book has 22 pages: paginated 1, 1, [plate], [caption], 2, 2, 3, 3, [plate], [caption], 4, 4, 5, 5, [plate], [caption], 6, 6, [plate], [caption], 7, 8. This large 8vo book is 10" x 7". Bound in black, flapped wraps with a drawing by Milton on the front. Printed by Dedalo, Bari, Italy, printing completed on 28 January 1993. Clean, conservatively Very Good condition, a scarce edition, and likely the unique copy bearing this inscription.; La Frontiera del Primo Foglio; Vol. 2; B&W Drawings; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 22 pages; Signed by Author.
