Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Merejkowski, Dmitri. The forerunner : the romance of Leonardo da Vinci. London: Constable and Company, February 1933 reprint. Hardback, Good, no dustjacket. Blue cloth, sunned to spine, bumped to corners and top/base of spine, with some marks on the reverse. Binding strong. Light tanning to… endpapers. 463pp. + publisher advertisements. Contents clean and bright. Dmitry Sergeyevich Merezhkovsky (1866 1941) was a Russian novelist, poet, religious thinker, and literary critic. A seminal figure of the Silver Age of Russian Poetry Merezhkovsky was twice forced into political exile. During his second exile (1918 1941) he continued publishing successful novels and gained recognition as a critic of the Soviet Union. Known as the author of philosophical historical novels which combined fervent idealism with literary innovation, Merezhkovsky became a nine-time nominee for the Nobel Prize in literature, which he came closest to winning in 1933. This is his second novel by Dmitry Merezhkovsky, first published in 1900 by Mir Bozhy magazine, then released as a separate edition 1901. It constitutes the second part of the Christ and Antichrist trilogy (1895-1907), started by the writer's debut novel The Death of the Gods. The novel starts with the merchant Buonarcozzi digging out the statue of Venus, with Leonardo invited as an expert. This echoes the final scene of The Death of the Gods with Arsinoya's prophecy about "future brothers" who will dig out the precious bones of Hellas, and start worshipping them again. The adventures of the great artist and thinker of the Renaissance are set against the background of conflicts and tragedies, all going to show the new epoch's re-emerging humanism, harking back to the spirit of Antiquity and contrasting the monastic horrors of the Middle Ages.
