2 volumes bound in 1, 12mo, text in French, the first work: pp: xxxv, 438[2], attractive maritime vignette title page printed in black & red, signed in ink to the verso of front endpaper 'Joanna Naomi Poore, 4th October 1808' and beneath 'Michael Peto . 1943', the second work, pp: ii,[3]-333[1], vignette title page. Bound together in full black polished calf, gilt extra, with ornate gilt spine & distinctive rolled gilt borders to covers, with marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, lightly rubbed to rear cover, otherwise very good, a handsome & attractive copy with the hinges just beginning to weaken. Joanna Naomi Poore was a minor when she married Edward Hawker with the consent of her mother. Two of their sons, Charles & George emigrated to Australia & became prominent citizens there. Edwark Hawker (1782-1860) was an officer of the Royal Navy who served during the French Revolutionary and Napolionic Wars. Born the son of a naval officer in 1782 his actual sea-going service did not begin until 1792, after which he saw action in some of the early engagements of the French Revolutionary Wars. Commissioned a lieutenant at thirteen, he served with several relatives both in the West Indies and in the waters off the British coast. A commander at twenty-one, he captained his own ships at the outbreak of the Napoleonic Wars. Posted again to the West Indies, he endured several mishaps, including running his ship aground, and then having it struck by lightning and damaged. He was a successful frigate captain in the Caribbean. Rewarded with the command of ships of the line, he spent most of his time in North American waters or the Caribbean towards the end of the Napoleonic Wars and during the War of 1812.
