Marbled endpapers. Tissue-guarded photographic frontispiece portrait of Edwin Forrest. Title page in red and black lettering. Limitation page signed and numbered by the author. Remarkable biography of Edwin Forrest (1806-1872), a prominent nineteenth-century American Shakespearean actor whose legendary feud with the British actor William Charles Macready helped spark the deadly Astor Place Riot of 1849. Edwin Forrest was the first great American-born tragedian. Heroic in technique, he was acclaimed by the popular audience but often scorned by the cultured. His career had important social and political implications. This volume is complete with its 11 tissue-guarded plates (including frontispiece). One of 200 copies, of which this is No. 19. Binding heavily rubbed along edges. Some abrasion to leather on spine. Front hinge starting. Ex-library pocket on inside of back cover. Very minor age-toning along paper margin.
