Cloth. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First edition. A first edition copy of this English translation of a collection of poems by Gérard de Nerval, inscribed by the translator to author Stephen Vizinczey. The first edition of this scarce English translation in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the origi…nal unclipped dust wrapper. Inscribed by the translator Brian Hill to the front free end paper: "Signed by the translator for Stephen Vizinczey. Brian Hill. November 1973." From the library of Hungarian-Canadian author Stephen Vizinczey, best known for his 'In Praise of Older Women', and 'An Innocent Millionaire'. His writing was praised by the likes of Graham Greene and Anthony Burgess, describing his fiction as social epics which breathe hope in a corrupt world. Gérard de Nerval (1808-1855) was the pseudonym of the French writer, poet, and translator Gérard Labrunie, who was a major figure of French romanticism, best known for his novellas and poems, especially the collection 'Les Filles du feu', which included the novella Sylvie and the poem 'El Desdichado'. This is a collection of thirty-five of his poems, translated into English with an introduction by Brian Hill. Included in this collection are the powerful sonnet-sequence 'Le Christ aux oliviers' or 'Christ in the Olive Grove'. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in excellent condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for a little offsetting to the end papers. Dust wrapper is smart but sunned, particularly to the spine of the wrap. Fine.
