Their friends, Alexis, Stanislas, and Theo, are also shown for similarity. It's a doting mother's unyieldingly innocent world-view of adolescence, not Larry Clark's, purposely, admirably so. The intimacy we are shown is chaste and warm, a brotherly bond without any disturbance or toxicity whatsoever. The photograph of the "First Kiss" of Nicolas isn't one at all.
