(1968). First edition. Corner tips slightly bumped, else near fine in illustrated boards; in a rubbed dust jacket with edge creases and tiny edge tears. 225 pages; appendix; index. Golos presents the spirit of Euclid in its synthetic approach to geometry and in its axiomatic approach. Explained at an elementary level, this text blends mathematical: intuition, creative thinking, abstraction, rigorous deduction and discovery.
Softcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition Thus. First edition thus, trade paperback, appears to be lacking the first leaf, and has a split between the top 1/3 of the spine and the text block. The book also has a slight skew to the binding, which is shaken, lightly peeled bumps to the spine ends and cover corners, wear with a few shallow dings to the cover edges, sunning to the spine, rubbing with light staining to the covers, and ink staining to the fore edge of the text block. Overall, a Fair copy.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Printed in Great Britain. Date on the title page. First Printing. Introduction, Chronological Catalogue, Principal Headings of the Classification, Subject Index, Alphabetical Index of Subjects, Author Index, Additions and Corrections; xii, 403, [1] pages. The original dark green printed wraps are very good with mild creasing to the spine where the black lettering is a bit dulled but still clear; the binding is strong and, despite some dust-spotting to the top edge, the interior is creamy-bright throughout. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] From the Introduction: "The subject of non-euclidean geometry has been discovered, or at least partially so, on several distinct occasions, but it is always associated with the names of Lobachevskij and Bolyai Janos whose first works on the subject appeared about 1830. The subject did not really begin to be studied seriously, however, until about 1870, when Houel's French translations of their somewhat inaccessible memoirs appeared. § The study of space of higher dimensions begins about the same time, for, except for a few scattered references in Kant and Leibniz, there is no explicit mention of the subject until Cayley's classical paper of 1843, and it did not become to any extent a subject of study until 35 years later. It now proves a most fertile field of research. § The object [here] is to produce as far as possible a complete repository of the titles of all works from the earliest times up to the present which deal with the extended conception of space, and to form a guide to the literature in an easily accessible form." As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.
