Trade Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. 27th Edition; 1st Sourcebooks printing. Corners bumped, slight edge wear. A bright, attractive copy. ; 7 ¾" - 9 ¾" Tall; 439 pages; "Lady Harriet Presteigne had already been informed that she was expected to marry Gilly, the young Duke of Sale, her old friend and playmate. Unfortunately, the thought had never occurred to the groom-to-be until his uncle cum guardian sprang it on him. Gilly accepted with reasonable good grace the necessity of carrying on the line. He liked Harriet; he simply didn't love her-certainly not in the way he dreamed love should be. At least Harriet knew there wasn't another woman in his life. Or was there? For one night Gilly brought to her home Miss Belinda Ware, a beautiful young 'foundling,' asking his fiancee's help in hiding her from her 'pursuers.' It was as fantastic a story as Harriet had ever heard-a situation which showed the seemingly gentle Gilly in quite another light.".

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 63 pages. "Since the death of Robert Lowell in 1977, no single figure has dominated American poetry the way that Lowell, or before him Eliot, once did . . . But among the many writers who have come of age in our fin de siècle, none have succeeded more completely as poet, critic, and translator than Robert Pinsky." --James Longenbach, The Nation With all the generosity and mastery we have come to expect from our three-time Poet Laureate, Robert Pinsky has written a bold, lyrical meditation on identity and culture as hybrid and fluid, violent as well as creative: the enigmatic, maybe universal, condition of the foundling. At the Foundling Hospital considers the foundling soul: its need to be adopted, and its need to be adaptive. These poems reimagine identity on the scale of one life or of human history: from "the emanation of a dead star still alive" to the "pinhole iris of your mortal eye." What is a particular person? How unique? What is anyone born as? Born with? Born into? The poems of Robert Pinsky's At the Foundling Hospital engage personality and culture as improvised from loss: a creative effort so pervasive it can be invisible. (SL#43).

First printing of this edition. A handsome, illustrated edition from The Bodley Head. From Wikipedia: " S. T. Coleridge argued that it has one of the "three most perfect plots ever planned." Tom Jones is generally regarded as Fielding's greatest book, and as a very influential English novel."
