First Edition
First edition of this classic source of British Columbian history, written shortly before Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867. The British naval officer Richard Charles Mayne(1835-1892) served as a lieutenant on the HMS Plumper, which surveyed the Pacific Coast of North America from 1857 to 1861. It surveyed the lower Fraser River, Burrard Inlet, Howe Sound, Sunshine Coast, and the waters around Esquimalt and Victoria on Vancouver Island. Mayne alsoserved in the naval theatres of the Crimean War (1854-6) and New Zealand (1863-4). Christie (1824-1902) was a Scottish coalmine owner, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and a keen traveller. He was also the father of the acclaimed writer and traveller Ella Christie. Shortly after he died in 1902, "it was found that he had disinherited his daughters, leaving his entire estate to an orphanage he had founded secretly. They decided to contest the will on the grounds of insanity, and it was settled in 1903, with the estate divided between the Christie sisters and the orphanage. Ella lived on at Cowden Castle for the rest of her life, managing the estate" (ODNB). Lowther 178; Sabin 537. Thomas W. Field, An Essay Towards an Indian Bibliography, 1873. Octavo (215 x 135 mm).
