Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Original schoolbook of the era, holding together well and easily read. Some kind of bookplate has been removed from the front pastedown, and "Coit Street School" has been rubber-stamped to top margins of pp. 27 and 49. Remains of paper library label to spine. First page is now the title page, which means the blank free front endpaper is presumably missing. 1898 date to title page matches copyright date; no later dates or printings mentioned. Internal hinges supported long ago with archival white tape. Paper-covered boards are well rubbed. (NOTE: White patterns that show on scan are NOT reflections from our light source. Paper coverings of boards have really peeled that badly.) The usual hagiography of Lincoln. "Children can help to make a bright, progressive school by obeying the requests of the teacher thoughtfully, promptly, and cheerfully. . . . It is the right, the privilege, and the duty of every intelligent male citizen who has reached the age of twenty-one to vote," etc., etc. (OK, where do we go to vote to "Get government out of the 'schooling' business"?) 255 pp. Reduced from $70.…

Wraps. Condition: very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 24 cm, 148 pages. Wraps. Illustrations. Serial No. 104-1. An independent contractor is a person, business, or corporation that provides goods or services under a written contract or a verbal agreement. Unlike employees, independent contractors do not work regularly for an employer but work as required, when they may be subject to law of agency. Independent contractors are usually paid on a freelance basis. Contractors often work through a limited company or franchise, which they themselves own, or may work through an umbrella company. In the United States, any company or organization engaged in a trade or business that pays more than $600 to an independent contractor in one year is required to report this to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as well as to the contractor, using Form 1099-NEC. This form includes the money paid, contractor's name, social security number, address, phone number, and an indicator about the existence of foreign bank accounts; independent contractors do not have income taxes withheld like employees. The distinction between independent contractor and employee is an important one in the United States, as the costs for business owners to maintain employees are significantly higher than the costs associated with hiring independent contractors, due to federal and state requirements for employers to pay FICA (Social Security and Medicare taxes) and unemployment taxes on received income for employees. Likewise, employees are protected from being fired without cause, and if fired or let go for other reasons are entitled to unemployment benefits, whereas independent contractors have neither protection nor entitlement. Employees are also entitled to receive overtime pay for work performed over the 40-hour-per-week standard, whereas independent contractors may work any number of hours (including far above this standard) with no change in pay. The United States Supreme Court has offered the following guidelines to distinguish employees from independent contractors: The extent to which services are integral to the employer's business. Greater integration favors an employee-employer relationship. The permanence of the relationship. More established relationships favor employee status. The amount of investment in equipment. When a worker makes a significant investment in the equipment they use in working for someone else, this suggests an independent contractor relationship. The degree of control by the principal. More control favors employee-employer status. The amount of financial risk. More opportunity for profit or loss favors an independent contractor relationship. The amount of initiative, judgment or foresight in open-market competition with others required for the success of the claimed independent enterprise. Entrepreneurial and distinctive work favors an independent contractor relationship.…

Wraps. Condition: Good. Presumed First Edition, First Printing. iii, [1], 122 pages. Wraps. Tabular data. The cover has minor wear and soiling. "The Perspective of State and Local Governments and the Impact of Federal Regulation" is a prominent legislative hearing topic focused on how federal mandates, conditions, and regulatory overreach impact local budgets and administrative autonomy. These hearings address long-standing challenges in the intergovernmental framework. Primary issues and perspectives include:Unfunded Mandates: State and local officials emphasize that federal mandates (e.g., environmental, labor, and healthcare standards) impose significant costs that are not matched by federal funding, forcing municipalities to reallocate resources or raise local taxes. Preemption and Authority: There are ongoing discussions regarding the degree to which federal preemption constrains states from setting localized policies tailored to their residents. Grants and Administration: The heavy administrative burden tied to federal grants-particularly categorical grants-leaves local administrators with little discretion to use funds efficiently for localized problems. Executive Action: Hearings routinely review the implementation of executive orders, such as E.O. 13132, which are designed to ensure federal agencies consult with state and local officials before enacting federalism-impacting regulations.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to T. [Thomas] Rockhill Ingraham, Oct. 25th, 1851 to head of Preface. Quarter brown cloth, brown paper boards. iv, 66 pp. Apparently lacking B&W folding map. Manuscript corrections to text, apparently in author's hand. Boards rubbed, discoloured, and stained. Wear to extremities, chip to spine head. Damp staining to foot of boards and text block. Oily staining to head of gutter throughout and rear endpapers, long tear to head of inner hinge at title page. Foxing to endpapers. Some sporadic chipping from opening to upper margins. Edward Duffield Ingraham (1793-1854) was an American lawyer and author, mostly famous as the author of several essays in the field of American history, this account of the events of the War of 1812 leading to the Burning of Washington being his best-known work. "This is the earliest carefully prepared monograph upon the Battle of Bladensburg and the subsequent capture of Washington, August 19--25, 1814. This event led to the resignation of General Armstrong as Secretary of War and the appointment of a committee to investigate the causes and circumstances of this disaster. In the Sketch here described General Armstrong is blamed and General Winder exonerated. The work has an extensive appendix, in which are given documentary proofs." Cole: Library of E.D. Church, p. 2553. Howes I-48. Sabin 34772. Provenance: Bookplate of Wallace Hugh Cathcart, (2 Apr. 1865-6 Sept. 1942), prominent bibliophile, best known for his association with the Western Reserve Historical Society of Cleveland, first as its president and then as its director. As a prominent member of the book trade, Cathcart was one of the founders and later vice-president of the American Booksellers & Publishers Association. Civic-mindedness and love of books attracted Cathcart to the WRHS where he acted as the organization's secretary (1894-97), president (1907-13), and finally became the society's first full-time director (1913-42). As a book collector, Cathcart concentrated his energies in developing one of the best historical libraries in the nation. [Case Western Reserve]. …

Contact seller5-star sellerA pair of documents related to the celebrations of April 14, 1865, surrounding the re-raising of the United States flag over Fort Sumter. The recapture of Fort Sumter in February of 1865, while perhaps not of great strategic value, was nonetheless as concrete a symbol as possible of the imminent restoration of the Union. The War Department's General Orders No. 50, issued by order of the President, were sent to prominent individuals as an invitation to the celebrations. They declare "That at the hour of noon, on the 14th day of April, 1865, Brevet Major General Anderson will raise and plant upon the ruins of Fort Sumter, in Charleston harbor, the same United States flag which floated over the battlements of that Fort during the rebel assault, and which was lowered and saluted by him and the small force of his command when the works were evacuated on the 14th day of April, 1861." They also specify a hundred-gun salute from the fort, a National salute including "every fort and rebel battery that fired upon Fort Sumter," and explicitly mention "the delivery of a public address by the Reverend Henry Ward Beecher." Lincoln apparently chose Beecher personally to speak at the event, remarking that "if it had not been for Beecher there would have been no flag to raise." In addition to Beecher's popularity as a speaker and his efforts speaking abroad on behalf of the Union during the war, the selection of such a noted and influential abolitionist for this event symbolically ending the war left no room for doubt about its causes. Present along with the General Orders is an official, postmarked envelope of the Adjutant General's Office, signed by Assistant Adjutant General E. D. Townsend and addressed to John H. Clifford. Clifford, the former Attorney General and Governor of Massachusetts, has docketed the envelope "Fort Sumter. April 14th 1865." Together with the General Orders sent to Clifford is the actual program of events used on the day. The booklet was published by the Port Royal New South, one of the earliest occupation newspapers printed in the Confederacy, and which continued to run until 1867. The activities included a public prayer led by Matthias Harris (who was the chaplain who presided over the raising of the same flag over Fort Sumter in December, 1860), readings of Psalms 126, 47, 98, and 20 by R.S. Storrs (future president of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions), a reading of Anderson's dispatch to the government announcing the fall of the fort, the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, and of course the promised speech of Henry Ward Beecher. A scarce and important group of documents from the ceremony which symbolically ended the Civil War. SABIN 25167. MIDLAND NOTES 91:96 (Programme). Program a bit soiled with a small tear at gutter, not touching text, later ownership inscription in blue pen on last page. About very good. General orders near fine.…
